Ron Johnson was hired in early December, but his position was not officially approved until Thursday night. The Kotzebue City Council unanimously approved his appointment during an executive session, according to the city’s attorney.

The 30-year-old Baldwin said in an email to KOTZ that she was humbled to be nominated and selected for the award.

The utility rate hasn’t increased since 2016 and the water, sewer and waste departments are currently operating at more than a $1.7 million deficit, which impacts the city’s ability to receive certain grants and pay off loans.
