GCI’s announcement comes one day after an announcement for a separate project that would bring the same internet speeds to the North Slope community of Utqiaġvik. GCI has several other fiber optic projects in Western Alaska, including in the Y-K Delta, Bristol Bay and Aleutian Islands regions.

In a release, Maniilaq officials said 30 residents tested positive on Monday, with another 14 testing positive Tuesday. The village is on high alert, with officials describing the situation as “widespread community transmission.”

It’s the first step in a process to potentially relocate the entire Northwest Alaska village from the threat of an eroding coast and rising sea levels.

Last week, the Native Village of Kivalina joined four Louisiana tribes in a formal complaint to the United Nations. They allege the United States has not done enough to protect the human rights of villagers, as erosion creeps into their communities.
