A Kivalina man is accused of attempted murder after allegedly grazing a man’s head with a gunshot Sunday morning.

According to court documents, a witness saw 62-year-old Lowell Sage Jr. pull out a gun and shoot the victim, after teasing between the two men escalated.

The witness recorded the altercation on a cell phone. Alaska State Troopers said Sage could clearly be heard on the recording saying, “I’ll kill you right now,” before a single gunshot.

Troopers couldn’t respond until Monday, due to weather conditions. Troopers said photos of the victim showed a large, red lump and blood on the left side of his forehead.

After questioning from troopers, the victim said he was able to gain control of Sage’s pistol after he was shot. The victim told troopers that Sage left the residence, but said he would return with an AK-47 rifle.

The victim left the house, saying he feared for his safety and for children who were also in the house. Several family members said Sage was riding around the village on a snowmachine looking for the victim.

Troopers say Sage admitted returning to the house twice. But, he said, he had wanted to apologize to the victim.

Sage also faces three felony assault charges. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 10, at the Kotzebue Courthouse.
