An Ambler man faces two felony charges after allegedly threatening a Shungnak man and his children and another woman who tried to intervene.

Troopers say 36-year old Marvin Cleveland Jr. made multiple death threats against another man and his children on Monday over VHF, a high frequency radio used to communicate in smaller communities. Witnesses told troopers they also heard Cleveland threaten to kill a separate Shungnak woman and her kids after she told him to “knock it off” over VHF.

A village public safety officer from Shungnak who contacted Cleveland said he was intoxicated, and also had a rifle close by.

Cleveland allegedly told the VPSO that he did not remember anything.

Troopers say the threats prompted parents in Shungnak and Ambler to take their kids out of school, with clinics in both communities going into semi-lockdown.

Cleveland faces two counts of terroristic threatening in the case. His next court date is set for January 24th at the Kotzebue Courthouse.
