The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today that more than $4 million is headed to several Alaska communities through its Public Assistance program.
The largest sum FEMA listed in the release, $1.1 million, will go to the Native Village of Shaktoolik to repair a protective berm damaged in a storm in October 2024.
The City of Kotzebue will also receive more than $160,000 for damages from the same October 2024 storm, which caused severe flooding, destroyed buildings and forced roughly 80 residents to evacuate their homes. FEMA says the funds will go toward repairing and replacing wall tents at Kotzebue’s North Tent City, a seasonal camp for commercial fishermen.
Additional funding is headed to the Southeast community of Craig for infrastructure repairs from a 2023 storm that caused flooding and landslides, and to the Interior’s Circle Native Community for damage from flooding in spring 2023, according to FEMA.
The release did not list other projects or communities that would receive the remaining money. FEMA did not respond to multiple calls from KOTZ news.
