A Kotzebue man is awaiting trial after police say he assaulted his girlfriend's son with a pistol.

Court records show 67-year-old Steven Farmer is charged with second-degree assault in the case.

According to charging documents, police received reports of gunshots and an armed man in the hallway of a Third Avenue apartment complex on May 9 at around 10 p.m.

Police say an argument between Farmer’s son and another man quickly escalated after Farmer’s father, Stephen, became involved. Stephen allegedly told police he grabbed a handgun and pointed it at the other man, then struck him in the head and injured him.

Police arrested Stephen and transported the struck man to Maniilaq Health Center to assess his injuries.

In his initial court appearance on May 10 Stephen pleaded not guilty. A judge set his bail at $1,500, with release conditions barring him from contact with the victim.

Farmer’s next hearing is set for May 20.
