Two people have died after a multi-vehicle collision Wednesday morning on the Seward Highway, according to Anchorage Police. A third person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. between Rabbit Creek and Potter Valley Road, according to an alert from police.
An investigation found that a 2006 Volvo was traveling northbound, towards Anchorage, and crossed into the southbound lanes for an unknown reason, police said in an update.
The Volvo crashed head on with a 2022 Ford Explorer traveling southbound. Both vehicles came to a stop in Potter Marsh, police said.
A third vehicle traveling behind the Explorer, a 2021 Ford Edge, swerved to avoid the crash and came to a rest in Potter Marsh. All three vehicles were partially submerged in water, police said.
Both the driver of the Volvo, and the driver of the Explorer were declared dead at the scene by medics with the Anchorage Fire Department.
The driver of the Ford Edge was transported to Providence Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
A portion of the highway was shut down until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
